DESCRIPTION:Quantized vortices are among the clearest manifestations of top
ology in condensed matter: the winding of the superconducting phase protec
ts flux quantization. In superconductors with multicomponent order paramet
ers\, vortices can fractionalize\, carrying only a fraction of the flux qu
 antum. Well-known examples\, such as half-quantum vortices in spin-triplet
superfluids\, are dictated by symmetry. But is the symmetry of the order
parameter the whole story?\nIn this talk\, I will argue that it is not. St
arting from the roles of topology (what is protected) and symmetry (what i
s allowed)\, I will show how microscopic degrees of freedom select which v
ortex states are realized. In multiband superconductors\, frustrated inter
band interactions can spontaneously break time-reversal symmetry and give
rise to fractional vortices with non-universal flux [1]\, as well as skyrm
ion-like coreless vortices [2]. In kagome superconductors\, the sublattice
structure stabilizes coreless vortices that point-group symmetry alone wo
 uld not single out [3].\n\n[1] Y. Iguchi et al.\, Science 380\, 1244 (2023
