DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, key quantum logic techniques demonstrated at NIS
T for preparing a single CaH+ ion in pure quantum states will be reviewed.
The molecule can be prepared in pure rotational and translational states
in its electronic and vibrational ground state manifolds and then coherent
ly excited to higher rovibrational states\, for example in the first\, 5th
and 7th excited vibrational state manifolds. The techniques used translat
e directly to other molecules\, including polyatomic species. A molecular
beam apparatus to load additional molecular ions is under development. Wit
h these tools at hand\, the feasibility of fully quantum-statecontrolled m
ulti-step dissociation of a molecular ion into a charged and a neutral fra
gment can be considered. The desired final state should ideally leave both
the charged and the neutral fragment in known internal quantum states and
in motional ground states of their respective external trapping potential
s\, envisioned to be a combination of radiofrequency ion and optical dipol
e traps. If a molecule can be dissociated without losing track of the quan
tum state\, an analogous process could also be run in reverse to combine f
ully quantum-controlled fragments into larger charged or neutral molecules
without the need for removing entropy. This may eventually enable fully c
oherent state-resolved chemical reactions applicable to a wide selection o
 f reactants and products.
