DESCRIPTION:The James Webb Space Telescope is transforming our view of the 
 distant universe. Its discoveries include unexpectedly luminous early gala
 xies with unusual chemical properties and a previously unknown population 
 of massive black holes. I will review some of these exciting and puzzling 
 findings and discuss their implications for our understanding of the forma
 tion of galaxies and black holes in the early Universe.
