DESCRIPTION:I will discuss how coherent electromagnetic radiation\, when tu
ned to collective modes in quantum materials\, can be used to induce unexp
ected dynamical phases. The core idea is that uncoupled normal modes start
interacting when these are driven nonlinearly.Furthermore\, these interac
tions depnd on the drive and hence mode couplings that are subdominant in
equilibrium become important. Such nonlinear phononics/ magnonics/plasmoni
cs etch. takes inspiration from nonlinear optics to coherently control mat
erials func-tion. An illustrative set of examples will be discussed for th
e nonlinear control of the crystal lattice\, in ferroic materials\, superc
 onductors and other systems.
