Abstract Precision spectroscopy is a driving force for the development of our physical understanding and novel applications in quantum sensing and optical clocks. However, only few atomic and molecular systems of interest have been accessible to precision spectroscopy in the past. This restriction can be overcome in quantum logic spectroscopy by combining the features of two ion species using techniques from quantum computing.
